Hey, you've got Beth.

( she almost feels paralysed. she does feel paralysed. on her desk rests a handgun that Beth put in her hand before she left, and she feels so, so cold. once again she had entered the life of one of her sisters, and she had died.

Beth was not Niki, had carved a different mark on her, but was just as important. she was her friend, and she had only ever had one of those, before.

she would never normally give someone this information. (she remembers, distantly, bringing someone else here once.) Beth is different. MK sends her porter information, a road name, and then coordinates. basically? typical MK bullshit. )

don't give this information to anyone, not even our sisters. make sure no one follows you. please.

( It's high key villainy, as set up by a seventeen year old girl. There is a light in the distance behind MK - down a pathway, and beyond what looks like another giant reinforced door, and MK awkwardly shifts her weight from one foot to the other. Her words come out in an awkward, shambling rush: )

Shut the door. We— we should be safe here, but...

( But please shut the door. Just in case. Just to be safe. Keep them safe, keep Beth safe. The door is, arguably, ridiculous, chosen by a survivalist in a country where the Cold War is very much still a thing and where people arrive with random powers. Ideally she'd like to get some sort of power nullifier built into the entranceway that she could activate, but she's not sure how that'd work. A containment field?

That's not the point. Her mind is tripping over her thoughts and distracting her with reinforced doors, when all she really wants to deal with is Beth. Beth alive. Real, solid. She gulps a little, and tentatively rests a hand on Beth's forearm, curling her fingers into the fabric of the sleeve.

Words are hard feelings are terrible please help her. )

( The door is shut, but she doesn't feel much more relaxed. Hard to imagine why, right? Why the door being shut doesn't help her relax?

Truthfully, though, when was the last time MK ever actually relaxed? She'd probably not be able to remember, if she took the time to think it over. Instead, Beth is facing her again and pulling her closer, and if it were almost anyone else MK would fight against it, quite literally. Instead, though her body tenses up on reflex, she awkwardly brings her arms up to hug Beth back. She left. Beth left her, and she's furious and devastated in the same breath, so her hands grip tight at the back of Beth's shirt.

She wants to ask Beth how, how she can keep them safe when she's gone and how is MK meant to watch the others and keep them safe from the shadows, how can she do anything when every time she touches the life of another clone it turns to ashes? Maybe even Jade would have been safer without MK. It feels so distant and so raw, thinking of Jade, and there is the horror of knowing that Beth knows about Helsinki now, knows that MK never told her, because Beth was so fragile and she still pushed her too far and too hard, even being so cautious.

But maybe she'd never been cautious enough to protect Beth, never in ways that were meaningful. She's corroded all these parts of her life without giving her the support to keep from collapsing. If Beth was fragile, MK was the weight that had helped crush her.

She can't get a word out, at first, just a deeply unhappy, pained sound that stutters in her throat, as she hugs Beth tighter. )
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

( They're standing in a concrete hallway leading to a bunker, and MK should lead them further that way. They could sit and drink iced tea, have some cookies. It feels offensively normal, actually, to do that. She's not sure she could actually do that without it feeling like a farce, and it's almost strange to think about anything she does being too normal. MK might live strangely, but that doesn't mean she isn't aware of the strangeness, the same way one is aware of a limb gone numb. It might be too late to prevent it, there might not be a fix, but—

iced tea could still be a ritual to bring comfort, in either case. That was something.

MK's hold on Beth does not loosen, just as Beth's hold on her is persistent, topples past persistent into desperate. )

If I'd left you all alone, you'd never have known—

( Her breath skips and catches, and she has to be quiet for a second. )

You would never have gone near Neolution or DYAD. I forced you into this.

( The same way she forced Niki into it, and she shuts her eyes tight shut. Part of her is hurt and so angry with Beth, but all the heat in it feels deflated with the reality of Beth in front of her, alive and real. )
